Macrolides

- The macrolides are a class of structurally-related Bacterial Ribosome Inhibitors. These drugs are often used in patients who cannot tolerate penicillins due to allergies. These drugs are well-tolerated and result in relatively few adverse effects.
Mechanism of Action |

- Macrolides bind to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome.
Adverse Effects |
---|
- GI System: Can cause some gastric irritation resulting in epigastric pain
- Biliary Tree: Can result in cholestasis and thus jaundice
