Cafe au Lait Macule

- Cafe au Lait Macules (CALMs) are localized well-demarcated macules or patches of uniform hyperpigmentation seen in 10-20% of the population. They typically develop in childhood and represent increased melanin deposition with normal numbers of melanocytes. CALMs range in size from 2-5cm and can occur on any skin surface. On their own, CALMs are completely benign but multiple lesions may be a cutaneous indicator of neurofibromatosis.
