Anticoagulant

Overview
  • Anticoagulants refer to drugs that inhibit coagulation either by interfering with the function of coagulation factors or preventing their synthesis. Depending on which coagulation factors are affected, different coagulation indices such as PT, PTT, or INR may be affected. Three basic classes of anticoagulants will be discussed here: Heparins, Direct Thrombin Inhibitors, and Warfarin. Only warfarin and certain direct thrombin inhibitors are available orally.
