Somatostatin Physiology
Overview |
---|
- Somatostatin is a peptide hormone secreted by the delta cells of the endocrine pancreas. This hormone is released in response to multiple signals which indicate recent ingestion of a meal such as increased concentrations of plasma nutrients as well as GI hormones which are released in response to food intake. Somatostatin acts locally within the Islets of Langerhans to reduce insulin or glucagon release from beta or alpha cells, respectively. In addition, Somatostatin inhibits Stomach Acid Secretion and Gastric Motility.
