Flucytosine
Overview |
---|
- Flucytosine is an orally-available antifungal used for treating systemic mycoses.
Mechanism of Action |
---|
- Flucytosine is activated by fungal enzymes and enters the nucleic acid synthetic pathway, generating a Thymidine analog. This analog can either inhibit normal Thymidine synthesis or can be incorporated during RNA synthesis, resulting in improper termination of the growing RNA chain.
Adverse Effects |
---|
- Pancytopenia: May result due to reversible bone marrow suppression
- Nonspecific Effects: These include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
