Salmaterol

Overview
  • Salmaterol is a long-acting direct adrenergic agonist with selectivity for beta2 receptors. It is typically administered in inhaled form where it is a potent long-acting bronchodilator used in maintenance treatment of asthma and COPD. Because of its selectivity for beta2 adrenergic receptors, there is relatively little cardiac stimulation, especially when administered in inhaled form. In contrast to albuterol, Salmaterol is displays slower onset but its effect lasts for over 12 hours. Thus it is not used for symptomatic relief of bronchospasm but rather for maintenance therapy of bronchospastic disease.
