- Hyperemia refers to a localized increase in the blood volume of a particular tissue due to local arteriolar dilation. Hyperemia is generally an active process that represents a physiological response to localized tissue requirements, potentially reactive to some injury process, and should not in and of itself be considered a pathogenic process.
