• An Ephelis, known commonly as a "Freckle", is a small hyperpigmented well-demarcated macule present, often in large numbers, on sun-exposed skin. Most epheli develop during childhood in susceptible light-skinned individuals. Freckles characteristically darken with sun-exposure. Histologically, epheli represent an increase in the amount of melanin pigment in the basal layer of the skin in the context of normal numbers of melanocytes.
