• Albuterol is a short-acting direct adrenergic agonist with selectivity beta2 receptors. It is typically administered in inhaled form where it is a potent rapid-acting bronchodilator used in symptomatic treatment of asthma and COPD. Because of its selective for beta2 adrenergic receptors, there is relatively little cardiac stimulation, especially when administered in inhaled form. In contrast to salmaterol, albuterol is displays rapid onset within minutes but is also short-acting with a half-life of several hours. Consequently, it is typically used for rapid relief of symptomatic bronchospasm.
