Medullary Sponge Kidney

Overview
  • Medullary Sponge Kidney is a pathological term referring to a condition characterized by multiple cystic dilations of the collecting ducts within the renal medulla thus giving the medulla a grossly "spongey" appearance. On its own, medullary sponge kidney does not cause any renal dysfunction and is often found incidentally. However, medullary sponge kidney can complicate other renal diseases which affect the medulla.
