Esophagitis

Overview
  • Esophagitis refers to inflammation of the esophagus and typically follows some defined injury. This may include irritation of the esophageal mucosa with refluxed or retained fluids as observed in GERD and achalasia, respectively. Esophageal infections with candida or HSV can also be a cause but extension of these microbes into the esophagus typically only occurs in immunocompromised patients.
